Leisure System and Electric Minds @ Berghain – This Week In Berlin
If your after a proper party this weekend, the illustrious Berghain/Panorama Bar will be hosting an all star night of huge names in both house and experimental electronic music. Starring two massive record labels, the highly regarded Leisure System, a Berlin based record label with a residency for a banging quarterly party at Berghain and Panorama Bar. Since 2008 these guys have been deliberately pushing boundaries of what’s musically appropriate in a club setting, challenging audiences with sounds that evade classification. Ned Beckett, who started Leisure System with Sam Barker, described the mission this way: “We want to be like the friend you have that always comes to you with new and exciting music, knowing that you’ll love it, even if you may never have considered listening to this kind of sound before.” It was after 3 years of running this party that they decided a label was next on the cards. For the launch of the label Barker and Beckett teamed up with Michail Stangl and Peter Dahlgren, later joining them a dude called Aaron Gonsher.
Like the party, the labels aim was to support leftfield artists without a fixed position in the clubbing world. These guys are doing something really different and exciting and tapping into an overly saturated music domain filling the gap for the weird and unusual.
Starting the night off downstairs in Berghain will be JoeFarr and Barker. Also joining the team there will be three incredible LIVE sets the first being two guys who together make Millie & Andrea who you might know separately from Manchester’s Modern Love imprint Andy Stott and Miles Whittaker. Together these dudes are known for their luscious dubbed out techno which they release solely through Modern Loves sister label, Daphne. Also playing live is Michigan’s super gal, Laurel Halo, recognised for her killer releases via Hyperdub, her style is a mix of chaotic ambient style experimental with moody jazzy like elements. Next up is Atlanta based experimental electronic producer and sound designer, Richard Devine. His music is characterised by highly complex rhythms and heavily processed sounds.
The second label, in charge of Panorama Bar takeover is London based label and excellent party thrower, Electric Minds. Since establishing themselves in 2005, Electric Minds have come to be one of London’s leading underground parties / record labels. These guys have been very crafty, utilising empty warehouses, snooker clubs, photographic studios, basements and disused churches for parties, which showcase both the label’s producers and international artists, DJs & record labels.
First on the cards upstairs in Panorama Bar, heavily associated with Electric Minds, is much loved soul David Moufang aka Move D. Making his first appearance on vinyl as part of a school bands competition in 1983, it was only another four years before he started toying with the medium as a DJ, playing funk, soul, hip-hop and proto-house. Move D is a pioneer in his own right, having dabbled in many many things and establishing himself as a veteran in all things house and techno both production wise and as a DJ. Next up is equally legendary, Levon Vincent. American born, Berlin based, this man has grown from strength to strength as a producer and DJ. His approach to music is humble and sincere, his style is submerged in dubbed out rhythms of industrial largeness that slots in somewhere between house and techno. Joining these two is Berlin’s foremost lass, Tama Sumo. Over the years Tama has grown as both a DJ and selector developing a varied style ranging from new and classic house to techno with a pinch of acid, electro and often a sprinkle of disco. Tama has the ability to consistently and effortlessly provide a crowd with a cross-genred selection and bring with her a vibe like know other. Also joining these guys is UK based, Dolan Bergin who will be sure to bring a large slice of groove and soul to the decks.
Below you can check out a few little tasters to get you in the mood for Friday eve, it’s going to be a BIG one. This track by Millie and Andrea is a straight up banger and this mix/podcast Levon Vincent did for Little White Earbuds is equally as great. Be sure to bring with you some solid stomping shoes and an open mind. Enjoy.
